Fence Materials Compared (2026)

Upfront price is only half the story. A wood fence that needs staining every few years can cost more over 20 years than vinyl that costs 40% more on day one. Here's the honest breakdown.

MaterialInstalled $/ft (2026)LifespanMaintenance
Chain link$15–$3015–20 yrsMinimal; occasional tension adjustment
Wood privacy$20–$4515–20+ yrsStain/seal every 3–5 yrs ($500–$1,000)
Vinyl / PVC$30–$5520–30 yrsWash occasionally; no painting
Metal (aluminum/steel)$35–$6530–50 yrsMinimal; touch up scratches

Chain link: cheapest, least private

Best value per dollar of durability. Downsides are privacy and looks — though black vinyl-coated chain link ($3–$5/ft more) looks far better than raw galvanized, and privacy slats add $5–$18/ft. Good for side yards, dog runs, and large lots where wood would break the budget.

Wood privacy: the classic, with a maintenance bill

Pressure-treated pine is the budget wood; cedar costs more but resists rot naturally and looks better unstained. Either way, budget $500–$1,000 every 3–5 years for staining — skip it and a 20-year fence becomes a 12-year fence. In wet climates, set posts in concrete with the wood kept above grade or expect early rot at the post base.

Vinyl: pay more now, forget it later

Vinyl runs 30–40% more than wood upfront but needs no staining, painting, or sealing for 20–30 years. That makes it cheaper than wood over a long hold in most cases. Watch out for: cheap thin panels that crack in cold climates, and color fading on dark colors in intense sun. Buy thicker-walled panels from established manufacturers.

Metal: the 40-year fence

Aluminum won't rust and suits humid or coastal areas; steel (including wrought-iron-look) is stronger and more secure but needs occasional rust touch-ups. Both cost the most installed but last 30–50+ years. Best for front yards, pool code compliance, and security.

The 20-year math nobody shows you

Take a 150 ft privacy fence. Wood at $30/ft installed = $4,500, plus four stain jobs at ~$750 = $7,500 over 20 years. Vinyl at $42/ft = $6,300 with near-zero maintenance = $6,300 over 20 years. The "expensive" option wins if you stay put.
