Do You Need Primer? An Honest Guide

Primer is the most oversold and most undersold product in the paint aisle — pushed where it's useless, skipped where it matters. Here's the straight version.

Prime. No debate.

Skip it. Honestly.

The one rule: primer solves adhesion and sealing problems. If your problem is neither, you don't need primer — you need paint.

How much primer?

Primer covers about the same as paint — roughly 300–350 sq ft per gallon. Budget the same gallons as one coat of your topcoat. One coat is almost always enough.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need primer if the paint says "paint and primer in one"?

For previously painted walls in good condition, no. For bare drywall, stains, or dark-to-light changes, use a dedicated primer — the all-in-one label doesn't replace it.

How many coats of primer?

One. Two coats of primer is almost never the answer; if one didn't cover, fix the surface.
